Luke Cage Leaves Harlem as Netflix Cancels Series

It would seem that Netflix is just slowly going to bring the hammer down on its mini-Marvel Universe. Following last week’s cancelation of Iron Fist, the streaming giant has now done the same to Luke Cage.

And the fact both series have been canceled late on a Friday evening hasn’t been lost on The Nerdy. This is a time politicians and corporations use to announce news they hope no one will notice. Oh, we noticed.

“Unfortunately, ‘Marvel’s Luke Cage’ will not return for a third season. Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is grateful to the dedicated showrunner, writers, cast and crew who brought Harlem’s Hero to life for the past two seasons, and to all the fans who have supported the series,” Netflix and Marvel Television said in a joint statement on the matter.

Here is a rundown of the current state of each Netflix’s Marvel series:

  • Daredevil – Season 3 released on Friday, Oct. 19, 2018
  • Jessica Jones – Season 3 in production
  • Luke Cage – Canceled with season 2
  • Iron Fist – Canceled with season 2
  • The Defenders – No plans past season 1
  • The Punisher – Season 2 in production

The seasons that are currently in production will definitely see the light of day, but it’s a question of what happens beyond those.

With Disney preparing to release its own streaming service in 2019, it definitely feels as though the partnetship is winding down. Both companies have said that isn’t the plan, but both companies also issued assurances in the scant seven days that passed between these two cancelations. That makes it a bit difficult to take those assurances seriously.

With Luke Cage having ended on somewhat of a cliffhanger in season 2 we’ll be sorry to see it go. Now we’ll never know how far Luke falls into the darkness of Harlem’s underworld.
