It appears that Hulu couldn’t agree with Marvel on the direction of the Ghost Rider series, and it is no longer moving forward.
Announced in May, Ghost Rider was to feature the return of Gabriel Luna as Robbie Reyes, a role he originated on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Deadline has reported that Hulu has now backed off of the plan as it had reached a creative impasse with the team that was working on it.
Helstrom, a series that was announced alongside Ghost Rider, is still moving forward at the streaming service.
While it’s unfortunate that the Ghost Rider series will not move forward, it’s interesting to see that Hulu still has this sort of independence. As Disney took operational control of Hulu earlier this year, it’s surprising that it can say “no” to another Disney-owned property.
It is unknown what the impasse was that was reached. There is also no word on whether or not the series could be shopped around to any of Disney’s other properties such as Disney Plus, ABC, Freeform, and so on. Only time will tell if this project is completely dead at this point.
