It appears that Ewan McGregor isn’t quite ready to give up the Force quite yet. According to a new report, the 48-year-old McGregor will be announced as the star of an upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi project on Disney Plus.
Multiple sources are reporting that Disney will announce the Kenobi project at the D23 conference next weekend. There’s no word as of yet if this project will be a multi-part TV season or made for Disney Plus movie.
McGregor was last seen on screen as Obi-Wan Kenobi in 2005’s Revenge of the Sith, but he did record new audio for 2015’s The Force Awakens.
The actor has stated many times over the years he would like to return to the role, and it was long rumored that he would be getting his own film. With the launch of Disney Plus, the company seems to be refocusing its efforts to the streaming platform, and it is spending a tremendous amount of money to do so. There are already two Star Wars series in the works with The Mandalorian having already completed shooting, and a second one starring Diego Luna and Alan Tudyk reprising their Rogue One characters Cassian Andor and K-2S0.
There is a large chunk of Obi-Wan’s life that has barely been touched upon that is ripe for storytelling. In the nearly 20 years he spent in the Jundland Wastes on Tatooine watching over a young Luke Skywalker. Star Wars Rebels gave us a very brief glimpse into this time period, but there is still a lot to explore. There is also nothing to say that he didn’t leave the planet a few times.
D23 will take place in Anaheim, California from Aug. 23 – 25 with the announcements of the Obi-Wan project expected some time during the event.
