The new WarnerMedia streaming service doesn’t even have a name yet, but it looks as though it has its first series. WarnerMedia has given a straight-to-series order for Dune: The Sisterhood.
Set in the vast Dune universe, the new series is designed to co-exist with Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming Dune movie. Not only that, but Villeneuve will serve as an executive producer on the series and direct the pilot episode. Jon Spaihts is set to write.
As the name would suggest, the series will focus on the Bene Gesserit, an ancient order of women who have been working for generations to breed the Kwisatz Haderach, a super being. Thanks to their mastery over their bodies and minds, they are also adept at the game of politics throughout the Imperium.
“The Bene Gesserit have always been fascinating to me. Focusing a series around that powerful order of women seemed not only relevant and inspiring but a dynamic setting for the television series,” Villeneuve told Deadline.
With over 20 Dune books – six by the original Frank Herbert – there is more than enough material to pull from.
As of right now, there is no word when the WarnerMedia service will launch or what it will be called. There have been rumors of the cost being between $16 and $17 a month. The increased price compared to other services is said to be due to the inclusion of HBO and Cinemax.
