As season 2 of The Mandalorian drew to a close, we were treated to a teaser of Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) and Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen) making themselves at home in the former palace of Jabba the Hutt. It then flashed on the screen that “The Book of Boba Fett” would premiere in 2021 and that led to a ton of confusion. Was this season 3 of The Mandalorian or something else?

Lucasfilm clarified things on Monday morning with an appearance from Jon Favreau on Good Morning America. The Book of Boba Fett is indeed an original series that will see both Morrison and Wen starring in it. Favreau and Dave Filoni will serve as executive producers as they do on The Mandalorian, but they will now be joined by Robert Rodriguez (El Mariachi, Sin City).

Rodriguez directed Chapter 14: “The Tragedy” in season 2 of The Mandalorian, but this is the first we’ve heard that he will have continued association with the Star Wars brand.

Favreau confirmed that The Book of Boba Fett is already filming and will debut in 2021. Production will then begin on season 3 of The Mandalorian meaning it will more than likely debut in early 2022.

Considering the teaser we saw for The Book of Boba Fett, it looks as though Boba and Fennec will be setting themselves up as the heads of a new crime syndicate in the galaxy and operate from a base on Tatooine. Seeing as there are numerous other crime syndicates throughout the galaxy, it should be interesting to see how they cement themselves as a formidable force.

No word yet on a specific release date beyond Dec. 2021.
