According to a report from Variety late on Thursday evening, Robert Pattinson is in final talks to star in The Batman for Matt Reeves. However, moments later, Deadline popped in and said that the deal is not done, but that Nicholas Hoult (X-Men: Dark Phoenix) is still in the running.
Welcome to the world of dueling casting rumors.
The Variety report indicates that the talks are in the final stages for Pattinson. Deadline, however, is saying that while he does have the lead, Hoult is still a possibility.
This is truly the culmination of months of speculation. Both Pattinson and Hoult have come up in multiple reports on the casting, but this feels like the closest we’ve come to an announcement yet.
Currently, The Batman is reportedly starting preproduction over the summer with an eye to beginning filming in the fall. Matt Reeves is said to still be polishing the script, so there is some time to play here still.
As for Pattinson, he is about to head off to film an untitled film for Christopher Nolan that will be released on July 17, 2020. The Batman isn’t due until June 25, 2021, so there is time for Pattinson to fit both films in.
With San Diego Comic-Con just around the corner, it feels as though we’ll get a definitive answer soon, it’s just a question of the exact timing.
