From the land of “it was only a matter of time” announcements, a reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer is in the works at 20th Century Fox.

Fox has hired Monica Owusu-Breen to pen the script for a new take on Buffy the Vampire Slayer Owusu-Breen will also serve as showrunner on the series with Joss Whedon also stepping into an executive producer role while also assisting on the script. The plan calls for the titular character to be African-American this time around.

The reboot has been in talks since last fall, but no outlet for the series has been chosen as of yet. The series will be taken out to streaming and cable outlets in the next few months and it is expected to ignite a bidding war. Based on the name recognition alone it is sure to be a hot property that numerous outlets would be interested in.

It is unclear how extensive Whedon’s role will be in the reboot as he has a new commitment at HBO to the upcoming series The Nevers.

The original Buffy the Vampire Slayer ran for secen seasons on the WB Network. It went on to spawn the spinoff series Angel as well as numerous comic book “seasons” that followed the conclusion of the TV series.
