The best retro games to buy through Sony’s PlayStation Mid-Year Sale

by Ron Duwell | July 4, 2018July 4, 2018 11:30 am EDT

If you haven’t seen yet, Sony is throwing a massive sale over the next two weeks with over 800 games on discount. This includes an army of excellent hits from yesteryear: PS One classics through PlayStation 3 and PS Vita, PlayStation 2 Classics on the PlayStation 3, and the remastered PlayStation 2 Classics on PlayStation 4.

What are the best, where should you keep a look out?

Well, as with any good retro sale, the best place to begin is the JRPGs.  The PS One was king of the genre in its heyday, and there are plenty to choose from in this sale. Each Final Fantasy that made it to the PlayStation is available for just $5.99.

Final Fantasy VII’s HD remaster is also available on the PlayStation 4 for $9.59, so if you’re looking for something more modern friendly, that’s the best place to start. However, Final Fantasy Tactics is the best game of the lot and the one most worthy of your dollars. Final Fantasy VI is also a classic, but the PlayStation version is notoriously bad for its crippling loading times.

That goes for Chrono Trigger as well, which is on sale for $5.99. Skip both of them if you don’t have other outlets.

Other Square classics from the era also on sale include Chrono Cross available for $5.99. a few other games at $3.49:

And, you know, Square Enix wasn’t the only developer to make JRPGs on the original PlayStation, although you wouldn’t know it through this sale. Capcom also made the excellent Breath of Fire IV, which I would pick up for $3.49.

And speaking of Capcom… Mega Man! Most of Mega Man’s PlayStation classics are on sale for $3.49.

Capcom also has Street Fighter Alpha 3 and Strider 2 up for sale if you need a solid brawler and some classic arcade action.

That just about wraps up the PS One Classics unless you’re a classic Resident Evil fan, which I am not. Instead, we’ll turn to the PlayStation 3’s PS2 Classics, of which there are only three availble, all from Capcom. God Hand is the clear winner of the three, but Maximo: Ghosts to Glory is a solid cult platformer. Both are selling for $3.99.

If you’re on a $20 budget, I’ll spell it out for you. Buy these!

  • Final Fantasy Tactics
  • Mega Man Legends
  • Breath of Fire IV
  • Parasite Eve
  • The Misadventures of Tron Bonne

I’m in such a JRPG mood lately, that I can’t turn down Final Fantasy Tactics, Breath of Fire IV, and Parasite Eve. They are all time favorites of mine, and for $3.49, they are a steal. As for the other two, consider them an entry point into the lovely universe of Mega Man Legends.
