The Batman Won’t Follow Year One Arc From the Comics, Says Director Matt Reeves

After a long silence following his appointment as director of DC’s The Batman, Matt Reeves has provided an update about the upcoming movie. While he didn’t say whether or not Ben Affleck’s time as the Dark Knight is over, Reeves did definitively squash a rumor that’s been circulating: The Batman won’t follow the Year One arc from the comics.

Year One is one of the many comic books that I love,” Reeves said. “We are definitely not doing Year One. We’re doing a story that is definitively Batman though, and trying to tell a story that’s emotional—and yet is really about him being the world’s greatest detective and all the things that for me, since I was a kid, made me love Batman.”

To that end, Reeves said he wants to create a movie that’s noir-driven and takes Batman into the heart of Gotham. What will the Dark Knight find when he gets there? We have no clue. Reeves said he did a lot of research when writing the movie’s script, which isn’t based on any comic in particular.

One thing Reeves confirmed we won’t see is Batman’s origin, which has been told several different times already, including in Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman.

Recent reports claimed Reeves wanted to hire a much younger actor to don Batman’s iconic cowl. But it sounds like Affleck older, more grizzled take on the character isn’t being ruled out entirely. When asked who would play the lead role, Reeves said he’s had discussions with Affleck about his future.

No release date is attached to The Batman, but the first draft of the script is due in a few weeks, according to Reeves.
