Everyone is thrilled Taika Waititi is returning for Thor Love & Thunder, but it is surprisingly not his next film. Waititi will be shooting a film for Fox Searchlight this fall and complete it before he heads back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
It was revealed this week that Waititi will be directing Next Goal Wins based on the 2014 British soccer documentary. The story follows Dutch coach Thomas Tongen who attempts to assists the American Samoa soccer team to qualify for the World Cup tournament.
Imaginarium Productions’ Andy Serkis and Jonathan Cavendish optioned the rights and then brought it to Waititi to direct.
Reportedly, Watiti has already completed the script for Thor Love & Thunder, so he should be able to squeeze in this film without much issue.
Watiti’s next film to hit theaters will be Jojo Rabbit, and his TV version of What We Do in the Shadows was picked up for a second season at FX. In short, he is a very, very busy man at the moment.
