New Mutants is still a go with Marvel’s blessing

Despite all of the naysaying, it appears that The New Mutants really will be hitting theaters in 2020.

Bill Sienkiewicz, one of the defining artists of the original New Mutants comic series, recently appeared on the Fatman Beyond podcast and offered an update on the long-delayed film.

I don’t know if I’m even allowed to mention any of this, but I will say that the New Mutants film, if you’ve heard anything about it the last couple years… two days ago, I heard from Josh Boone, the director. And he sent me a new trailer. They’ve been working on it, and it is phenomenal. I got chills. It looks like, because of the whole Disney-Fox merger, takeover, whatever … it’s got the blessings of Marvel. And it feels more Marvel in terms of what they’re doing, but also the horror elements of the film are in place. It’s really, absolutely stellar, just what I’ve seen.

The New Mutants movie has been through the wringer already. It was originally scheduled to be released on April 13, 2018, it then moved to Feb. 22, 2019. Following that move it was pushed to Aug. 2, 2019. There has been some speculation that following the acquisition of Fox by Disney that the film would move to Disney Plus, but the studio confirmed at CinemaCon 2019 that it would still be released theatrically. Then on May 7, 2019, Disney announced it was moving the film again to April 3, 2020.

What’s curious, however, is there had been a lot of talk of eventual reshoots, but nothing has come of that. So will the film now be released as is? Seeing how X-Men: Dark Phoenix bombed, it’s kind of amazing Disney is still moving forward with this release, but the company must have something in mind.

And will this somehow factor into the introduction fo mutants into the MCU? Is it part of the old X-Men series? Or is ti a stand-alone film of some type? Hopefully, we get answers at some point.

The New Mutants will hit theaters on April 3, 2020. The new trailer is expected in January.
