Ridley Scott appears to be heading back to the days of ancient Rome with his eyes set on a Gladiator sequel.

According to a report from Deadline, Ridley Scott is prepping a sequel to his hit film from the year 2000, Gladiator. The film scored 11 Academy Award nominations for the film and took home five of them including Best Pictor and Best Actor for Russell Crowe.

The original film ended with Crowe’s Maximus’ death, but that won’t be an issue here. Apparently the story is set to follow Lucius, the son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen). Both the son and mother were saved by Maximus and that apparently left quite an impression on him.

Ridley Scott is heading up the project at the moment with an eye to directing again. Peter Craig is being tapped for scripting having just come off of Top Gun: Maverick. Paramount is said to be the studio behind the film, but Universal has an option to co-finance based off its involvement with the original film.

No timeline for the film has been announced as of yet.
