Knives Out sequel officially set at Lionsgate

Hide all the murder weapons, it appears that Daniel Craig is going to be solving another murder in a Knives Out sequel.

Writer and director Rian Johnson wanted to have a go at making a murder mystery in the same vein as Agatha Christie. He finally got his chance with Knives Out, and his modestly budgeted $40M movie took in $294.6M. Needless to say, sequel talk started early.

During the Lionsgate earnings call this week, CEO Jon Feltheimer announced a Knives Out sequel is officially a go.

Beyond Johnson again writing and directing, Craig’s return seems to be set. While no comment was made if he has officially signed on, the actor seems keen for another outing. “Sure,” Craig recently told EW about whether he would return to the role. “I’d be over the moon. I mean, I’d do anything for Rian. If he writes something, I’ll do it. Of course I will. Why wouldn’t I? I had a ton of fun doing it. You aim for that every time, you aim for that to work out. It rarely, rarely does, but it did on that movie and how nice is that?”

If Johnson follows the Christie formula, one would imagine only Craig will return. Christie re-used her detective Hercule Poirot throughout her stories, but all of the characters rotated for each book. There’s no reason to think Johnson won’t do the same.

This seems like an easy enough concept to carry out across several movies, and what studio doesn’t want a franchise?

No word yet on a targeted release date.
