The streaming wars officially got a new combatant on Tuesday. NBC Universal finally took the wraps off its streaming service and announced it will be launching Peacock in April 2020.
The new service – which will offer both ad-supported and subscription tiers – will offer a mixture of original programming and catalog content. Series such as Parks & Rec will move from its current home on Netflix to Peacock.
Original content will see NBC bringing back a lot of fan-favorite properties. As previously reported, Battlestar Galactica will receive a reboot, and it will be joined by a few revivals. The Punky Brewster revival announced earlier this summer has been ordered to pilot on the new service.
Ordered directly to series is a revival of Saved by the Bell. The new series is described as, “When California governor Zack Morris gets into hot water for closing too many low-income high schools, he proposes they send the affected students to the highest performing schools in the state – including Bayside High. The influx of new students gives the over privileged Bayside kids a much needed and hilarious dose of reality.”
Currently, only Mario Lopez and Elizabeth Berkley are signed on to carry on their original roles of A.C. Slater and Jessie Spano respectively. Further cast members are reportedly in talks, most notably Mark-Paul Gosselaar. Seeing as it is his old character (Zack Morris) that sets the new story in motion, it would seem he does need to be involved.
Peacock will mix both old and new series, but it is just the latest in the growing streaming wars. Come spring 2020 we will see both Peacock and HBO Max launch, and then things will heat up even more as all these services hunt for subscribers.
