Everything old is new again as the saying goes, and that is especially true for bringing TV series back to life. The latest one to join the ever-growing line-up is a sequel series to 1980s sitcom, Punky Brewster.

Running from 1984 to 1988, Punky Brewster followed the story of Penelope “Punky” Brewster (Soleil Moon Frye) being raised by her foster father, Henry Warnimont (George Gaynes). The first three seasons ran on NBC, with the fourth and final season running in syndication.

According to Deadline, the sequel series would see Frye return to the role of Punky, but as a single mother with three children. She encounters a young girl who reminds her of what she was like at that age and takes her in.

The new series will be written and executive produced by Steve and Jim Armogida (School of Rock, Grounded For Life). Executive producers will include Frye, series creator David W. Duclon, and Emmy-winning producer Jimmy Fox (The Arrangement)

There’s no word yet on a target production date on the series, or even one outlets it will be shopped to. With streaming services hungry for content, and consumers seeming very friendly to revisiting old properties, this series shouldn’t have an issue finding a home.

It looks as though the 1980s and 1990s are very much back in style right now in Hollywood. Who knows what series could be next on the hitlist.
