Watch Dogs Legion info leaks ahead of E3 – you can play as any NPC

With the Watch Dogs series being all about hacking and leaking information, it only seems appropriate that information about Watch Dogs games keeps leaking out. With 2019 being an “off” year for Assassin’s Creed, it seemed almost a foregone conclusion that we’d get a new Watch Dogs game, but the details that leaked out via a posting on Amazon UK – and confirmed by Kotaku – suggest this game is a bit different than “more hacking, new location” like we would’ve expected.

The game is called Watch Dogs Legion, and the conceit is really interesting – you can step into the shoes of any NPC in the game.

Here’s the product description from Amazon:

Play as anyone, Every individual you meet in the open world, has a full set of animations, voice over, character traits and visuals that are generated & guided by gameplay systems

Kotaku says that depending on who you play as, you’ll see different things and that, apparently, this system is quite ambitious; enough so that it may have delayed the game.

This is a really interesting idea, and indeed is ambitious as hell. I have my concerns; it’s hard enough to tell a story about one person, and even harder to tell a story about any person. My first instinct is that this feels like a way to take the game online without breaking the fiction and make it a massively multiplayer experience, and I hope that’s not what this is. The description doesn’t sound like it, though, so I’m optimistic going into Ubisoft’s E3 press conference, which kicks off on Sunday, June 9, at 1PM PST.
