It seems Disney has figured out a solution to Star Wars and Avatar movies fighting it out at the box office: Alternate years.
There had been an oncoming collision of films for some time now with Star Wars and Avatar movies both wanting to be released in December in various years. Now that Disney has purchased 21st Century Fox, a simple solution arose and that was to simply have them trade off.
- 12/17/21 – Avatar 2
- 12/16/22 – Unknown Star Wars
- 12/22/23 – Avatar 3
- 12/20/24 – Unknown Star Wars
- 12/19/25 – Avatar 4
- 12/18/26 – Unknown Star Wars
- 12/17/27 – Avatar 5
It’s a logical plan, and, in theory, it gives Disney massive control of every December for years to come.
No information is known about these Star Wars films as of yet. Rian Johnson is setting up a trilogy, as are David Benioff & D.B. Weiss of Games of Thrones fame. There’s no indication if we’re looking at one new trilogy, or a mixture of two. We’ll just have to wait and see.
This will essentially make December as Disney’s month. It was already heading that way, and now it just looks as though that’s the definite plan.
