Matt Reeves’ Batman movie has a release date and story details

After a lot of musical chairs, rumors, and waiting, we finally have an idea of when we’ll next see Batman on the big screen and what we can look forward to. Warner Bros. has Matt Reeves’ yet-untitled Batman film scheduled for June 25, 2021.

Originally set to be directed by Ben Affleck, Reeves joined the picture in early 2017, and since then we’ve had a lot of questions. Is this movie coming out? When? And what the heck is it about? We’ve had a lot of Batman movies, so a lot of ground has been tread when compared to so many other superheroes.

Now that we know when the movie is coming, though, we’re getting a few interesting tidbits about what to expect from the movie. Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Reeves spilled some beans for us to clean up.

“It’s very much a point of view-driven, noir Batman tale. It’s told very squarely on his shoulders, and I hope it’s going to be a story that will be thrilling but also emotional,” Reeves said. “It’s more Batman in his detective mode than we’ve seen in the films. The comics have a history of that. He’s supposed to be the world’s greatest detective, and that’s not necessarily been a part of what the movies have been. I’d love this to be one where when we go on that journey of tracking down the criminals and trying to solve a crime, it’s going to allow his character to have an arc so that he can go through a transformation.”

The detective focus is probably the most interesting part for longtime Batman fans. In the pages and on the classic animated series, we get plenty of chances to see Batman playing detective. In movies, though, where time is of the essence, the focus has traditionally stayed on Bat-fists and Bat-tech. Detective work has taken a backseat – especially so in the latest solo Batman outing, The Dark Knight Rises, which showed Batman as more of a burnt-out boxer than a detective or ninja.

Reeves also said about casting that “there will be a Rogues Gallery.” That suggests more than one villain, possibly more than two. If he can gracefully put that into a movie, that could be great, but previous superhero movies have struggled with multiple villains in the past. But Reeves said casting begins soon.

Right now, the movie is called The Batman, but Reeves said that he doesn’t “ultimately know” what he’ll call it. So for the time being. The title could end up being a huge hint at what we’re seeing on screen. Detective-focused stories like Batman: Long Halloween would be fun to see on-screen, so let’s all cross our fingers. We only have two years to wait. If you’d told me we’d get a Joker movie before a Batman movie just a few years ago, I would’ve laughed. Now it’s objectively true.

Now, how about some news about that Flash movie?
