Disney has learned there is some interest in this world for what makes villains tick, and that concept opened a whole new world for the company. Starting with Maleficent – which has a sequel coming this year – Disney exploring the origins of carious villains and next up is a look at Cruella de Vil in Cruella.
Filming has just begun on the film that will tell the origin story of the 101 Dalmations antagonist. Emma Stone is stepping into the role originally voiced by Betty Lou Gerson in the 1961 animated film. During the presentation on upcoming Disney films at D23, the first image was released of Stone in the signature two-tone hairstyle.
She looks a bit more new wave or punk rock than her animated counterpart, but we can’t wait to see more of this.
Joining Stone in the film will be Emma Thompson, Paul Walter Hauser, and Joel Fry. The film is directed by Craid Gillespie (I, Tonya).
Where will this villain train stop? No one knows, but we’re curious to see what else Disney has planned.
Cruella will hit theaters on May 28, 2021.
