It sounds like Ewan McGregor’s role in Birds of Prey has just been revealed, and it’s not what you think.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the charismatic actor is set to play the villain Black Mask, a mafia-type who ruthlessly lords over Gotham. He’s been one of Batman’s most notorious antagonists since his introduction in 1985, taking up a prominent place in the rogues gallery.
The casting is a surprise considering McGregor typically plays characters who are affable. The actor is famous for portraying Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars prequel trilogy and Edward Bloom in Big Fish.
McGregor joins Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who will portray Huntress, and Jurnee Smollett-Bell, who is playing Black Canary. The film will also feature Margot Robbie reprising her role from Suicide Squad as Harley Quinn.
Birds of Prey is currently scheduled for a release on February 7, 2020.
