CW renews Riverdale, Legacies, Nancy Drew, and more

The CW isn’t messing around when it comes to the 2020-2021 TV season. On Tuesday the network renewed all 13 of its current series, plus ordered additional episodes of Katy Keene.

Unlike other networks, The CW likes to give early renewals so that its creative teams can plan for the next year. It has done this for years, but seeing 13 series renewed in January is just something you don’t see happen.

Altogether The CW renewed the following 13 series:

Of course, both Supernatural and Arrow are coming to an end this year, and those slots will need to be filled. An Arrow spinoff is being worked on that will center on Mia Smoak and the Canaries, but there are still going to be some holes in the schedule. The aforementioned Katy Keene sounds as though it will be running outside of the normal season, so who knows what else The CW may be cooking up.

Another reason for the early renewals is the ending of the Netflix deal with The CW. There is a lot more money to be made now with more streaming players in the mix, and the series will be heading to the highest bidder, or the service of the studio that produces it. For instance, Batwoman will be heading to HBO Max while Nancy Drew is destined for CBS All Access. It will be annoying for consumers to track all of the series down, but if it means the series get renewed, we’re all for it.
