It’s pretty normal for movies to go back for reshoots after some editing work has been done on them, but that’s not exactly what’s happening with Avengers 4, according to actor Mark Ruffalo, who can’t seem to keep his mouth shut. But don’t worry, he didn’t drop any spoilers this time – just some interesting details on how the movie is being shot.
Talking on the Marvelists podcast, the actor said that the cast was getting ready to do reshoots this month, but that’s not all.
“We’re doing reshoots in September, and then we’ll go back into the international tour… then you guys will get the second installment [Avengers 4]. Which we don’t even know what it’s gonna be yet,” Ruffalo said.
“We’re not just doing reshoots,” he continued. “We’re going to finish the movie, which we didn’t really get to finish totally when we left it last year.”
When the Russo brothers shot the third and fourth Avengers films, they shot them together. Rather than split the cast up, split the shooting up, they just brought everything together and filmed the majority of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4 together. It seems, however, the brothers decided to leave some of it undone.
Before we worry about the quality of the movie, there are a ton of good reasons for them to have done this. It could be a simple matter of keeping the events of Infinity War under wraps for that much longer. It could be that they were waiting to see how people responded to those events, too. There’s also the matter of how shooting and editing a movie works. It could be that, even if the brothers had the majority of the movie in the can last year, they weren’t sure how the whole thing would shake out, and purposely left some significant space to fill in those gaps.
Either way, there’s more shooting, and it sounds like even the cast isn’t fully up on what they’ll be doing.
“I don’t even know what they really know exactly,” Ruffalo said of the brothers. “Some of it is happening while we’re there, it’s pretty amazing. And we’ll show some stuff and a few days later come back and reshoot it because we want to take it in another direction. It’s a very living organism even as we approach it being a locked picture. We’re still working on it.”
A whole Mark Ruffalo interview without a spoiler? No accidental reveal that the characters have been the ghosts of Skrulls the whole time? No half-uttered hint that Infinity War actually takes place before Avengers somehow? Well done, Ruff.
Avengers 4 is set to hit theaters on May 3, 2019. The movie remains untitled, likely to get its title once Captain Marvel is in or nearing theaters.
