X-Men: Dark Phoenix trailer – Death befalls an X-Man

The Dark Phoenix Saga is one of the most famous storylines to ever feature our favorite mutants, and now it’s time for a second go at telling the story on film.

Famously, X-Men: The Last Stand tried to tell the story of the Dark Phoenix, but what we ended up with was less than satisfying and almost felt like a Zombie Phoenix story more than anything else. There was no internal conflict for Jean (Famke Janssen). She simply went through motions at the behest of Magneto (Sir Ian McKellen).

It’s clear that X-Men: Dark Phoenix isn’t going to be completely beholden to the source material, but it already feels as though it will be closer to what we would expect. The trailer kicks off with Jean (Sophie Turner) in agony over her actions. The implication clearly being that she has killed Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence). And director Simon Kinberg has made it explicitly clear that is indeed exactly what we see happen in the film.

With the Disney acquisition of 21st Century Fox in the home stretch, it certainly appears that this will be the final film in this series of X-Men stories. More than likely Disney will completely reboot the franchise to integrate it with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so enjoy this while you can.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix will hit theaters on June 7.
