It would seem that Dean DeBlois is wasting no time spreading his wings following his decade at the helm of the How to Train Your Dragon series.
Last month we reported he will be directing the Micronauts movie for Paramount. Now, it seems, he is already setting up his movie following that one over at Universal where he will be tackling a new adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island. It has been adapted many times over the years, but the most famous version may be the 1950 release from Disney.
The story follows a young boy named Jim Hawkins who is enamored with the pirate Long John Silver. Together they seek a buried pirate treasure that tears Hawkins between his benefactors and his admiration for Silver.
Evan Spiliotopoulos (Beauty and the Beast) will write the script with DeBlois assisting on the story. Todd Lieberman and David Hoberman of Mandeville Films will produce along with DeBlois.
With two high profile projects on his plate, DeBlois is going to be busy. The Micronauts movie is currently slated to hit theaters on June 4, 2021. Treasure Island will then be his second project as it is earlier in its development cycle currently.
