SEGA Genesis Metroidvania from DICE gets Release 25 Years After Being Cancelled

Long before it became a household name with Battlefield and Mirror’s Edge under its belt, a small-time game developer by the name of DICE developed a SEGA Genesis “Metroidvania” that came just shy of seeing the light of day.

Hardcore came within one bug from being greenlit before the game’s publisher, Psygnosis, was bought out by Sony, dooming its release on a competing SEGA platform. Bits and pieces of the game have been seen since then, but with the help of Sony, Hardcore is finally going to get an official release through the PlayStation 4 and PS Vita, twenty-five years after its original intended date.

While the game is being released for the PlayStation 4 and PS Vita, DICE says that development is wrapping up using the original SEGA Genesis hardware through a third-party developer, Strictly Limited Games.

With input from the original developers, we [will] try to add the missing tank levels back into the game. Everything is being handled with care, to guarantee gamers get the best possible version of this masterpiece.

Hardcore, being released under its code name, will be available on the PlayStation 4 and PS Vita in 2019.
