New Mutants film mystery deepens

Are we ever going to see The New Mutants film? Possibly, but it sounds like it may not be in a movie theater.

According to a new report from The Hollywood Reporter, the fate of The New Mutants is a bit of a mystery at the moment. While we know we’re getting X-Men: Dark Phoenix, the younger band of mutants is a bit of a question mark due to the 21st Century Fox acquisition by Disney.

Originally The New Mutants was scheduled to hit theaters in April 2018, but then it got pushed to Feb. 2019.  Then another push came along shoving it to Aug. 2, 2019 with the news there would be some reshoots. As of right now, those reshoots have not happened and are also not scheduled. Sources told THR that the scheduling of those is on the shoulders of director Josh Boone, but even that seems uncertain.

Now there are even talks that it may actually end up skipping the theater and going straight to Disney+, the streaming service that Disney plans to launch in late 2019.

With Dark Phoenix closing out this incarnation of the X-Men before they find their way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this makes a ton of sense. It wouldn’t confuse audiences too much, plus it would give the company so more content for its brand new service.

While fans of the New Mutants may feel a bit cheated for now, hopefully, we could see another attempt made once Disney gets the ball rolling on their own take on the mutants.
