Netflix Taps Shonda Rhimes and Matt Reeves for Epic Sci-Fi Series

Netflix has tapped some big-time Hollywood hitters to oversee its next tentpole project. The Batman director Matt Reeves and TV creator and producer Shonda Rhimes are set to join Netflix’s Recursion.

Based on the yet-to-be-released book by Blake Crouch (due out June 2019), Recursion is a sci-fi thriller that takes place in the distant future where a scientist discovers a way to not only relive memories, but alter them. This offers many people the opportunity to live a brand new life that is exactly what they wanted. However, it also lets people exploit it.

Netflix believes the series has so much untapped potential that it’s planning on building a TV universe around it.

With Reeves and Rhimes onboard, Recursion has the opportunity to be the next Game of Thrones. Reeves is best known for his impressive work on the Planet of the Apes movies and is developing the upcoming The Batman movie for Warner Bros. Rhimes, meanwhile, is a legendary TV producer responsible for Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal and How to Get Away with Murder. She recently left her home at ABC for Netflix where her Shondaland company will have the opportunity to explore ambitious new projects such as Recursion.

“Projects like this are why I came to Netflix,” said Rhimes. “The opportunity to explore a multi-genre universe in innovative ways is extremely exciting. Matt [Reeves] and Blake [Crouch] both have the tremendous ability to build compelling characters and imaginative landscapes and I am thrilled to work alongside them”

Netflix did not announce a timeframe for when we can expect Recursion to be released.
