Loki Concept Art Reveals He Almost Looked Like A Raving Lunatic

Watching Tom Hiddleston’s Loki transform from a jealous step-brother in Thor to earning redemption in Avengers: Infinity War has been nothing short of mesmerizing. He’s always unpredictable, and his bad boy personality stole the show whenever he was onscreen.

Since appearing in Thor, Loki’s look hasn’t evolved all that much, with the same slicked back black hair and long green coat. But, turns out, he almost looked a lot different, according to Charlie Wen, Marvel’s former Head of Visual Development.

Wacky Loki! My first sketch of him as someone a bit off for the first #thor There were other options but this is the looniest one so I wanted to share. As I think of his backstory and focused on the manipulative bent than his relationship with his bro Thor which develops later, I put more character depth in his final version. At this time I also wanted to play with the idea that Asgard had magic based on science beyond human tech understanding. I’ll post the final Thor I Lokis next! * * * * #loki #thor #avengers #marvel-studios #avengersinfinitywar #infinitywar #behindthescenes #instadaily #cool #movie #drawing #sketch #marvel #bigboy #mcu #conceptart #character-design #picoftheday #art #original #comics #comicbooks #digitalart #imcharliewen #illustration #visualdevelopment #visualstory #storytelling #superhero #story @marvelstudios @marvel @imcharliewen

Wen shared new concept art of Loki on his Instagram, revealing a figure who looks far more unstable than who audiences have grown to love/hate. In addition to sporting a rather maniacal look on his face, the concept art shows Loki wearing armor and a green toga.

Wen explained his approach to the design:

Wacky Loki! My first sketch of him as someone a bit off for the first Thor. There were other options but this is the looniest one so I wanted to share. Maybe if Loki wore such ornate armor, he wouldn’t have been so easily defeated by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War.
