For the first time since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in Dec. 2019, a film has broken the $1B mark at the box office.

Taking in another $81.5M domestically in the U.S. over the Christmas weekend, Spider-Man: No Way Home now stands at $467.33M domestically. Internationally it has taken in $587.1M for a combined total of $1.05B.
Two of the most notable things about this news is that it has been accomplished without being released in China. It’s are for films to hit $1B without that market, and to do it in the current theater market is just that much more impressive.
This also skyrockets the film to the third-highest grossing film for Sony Pictures. Skyfall is in second place with $1.11B, and first place belongs to Spider-Man: Far From Home with $1.13B. With the current standing of No Way Home, it seems a lock to become the studio’s highest grossing film by next weekend at the latest.
While the overall box office is still a long way off from reaching back to those pre-coronavirus highs, this is a good sign that there is still some life out there depending on the material being presented to the audience.
