It worked for Trolls World Tour, and now Warner Bros. is going to try it with Scoob!
The new Scooby-Doo prequel, Scoob!, was due to hit theaters on May 15. The film is done, and with their being a bit of a traffic jam on the box office schedule, it is now going to head to premium VOD. The film will be available for rental on May 15 for $19.99, or if you prefer to purchase it, it will set you back $24.99. With only a $5 difference, the rental almost seems superfluous.
“While we’re all eager to be able to once again show our films in theaters, we’re navigating new, unprecedented times which call for creative thinking and adaptability in how we distribute our content,” Warner Bros. chairman-CEO Ann Sarnoff said in a statement.
“We know fans are eager to see Scoob! and we’re delighted we can deliver this feel-good movie for families to enjoy while they’re home together.”
When Universal went this route with Trolls World Tour, the North American Theater Owners (NATO) organization expressed its displeasure with the decision. “Exhibitors will not forget this,” John Fithian, chief of NATO, told The Hollywood Reporter at the time. Will similar displeasure be coming Warner Bros. way next?
Scoob! hits VOD for rental and purchase on May 15, 2020.
