Matchbox is going to be rolling into the future with a first-of-its-kind CarbonNeutral toy and packaging system.

Mattel has announced that it is preparing its first Matchbox car that will be made from 99% recyclable materials. The first toy will b a model of the Tesla Roadster and it will be launched in 2022. It will serve as a blueprint to make the entire Matchbox toy line 100% recycled, recyclable, and bio-based plastics by 2030.

“Since the inception of the modern-day die-cast car nearly 70 years ago, Matchbox has been using design and innovation to connect kids with the real world around them through play,” said Roberto Stanichi, Global Head of Vehicles at Mattel. “Matchbox is committing to using 100% recycled, recyclable or bio-based plastic materials to do our part in addressing the environmental issues we face today, and empower the next generation of Matchbox fans to help steer us towards a sustainable future.”

The first product on this roadmap now and is the Matchbox Power Grabs assortment that features a paper foam inner tray.

There is a large movement within the toy industry towards more eco-friendly material use, and this is the type of announcement we expect to see a lot more of in the coming months and years.
