In 2016, Joel Hodgson launched a Kickstarter campaign called “Bring Back MST3K.” It went over so well that Netflix stepped in and asked to purchase the new episodes. The success of the episodes led to a second season on the streaming service. However, at that point, it all came to an end as Netflix opted not to renew it again.

Now the rights are back with Hodgson, and we’re off to the races again with  “Make More MST3K.”

This time, the significant change is Hodgson’s plans to self-distribute through a new streaming service called the Gizmoplex. This will give him more freedom to release the episodes as he sees fit, and allow him to speak with fans directly about keeping the project going. Essentially, so long as people are willing to keep paying, they can keep making more episodes.

The campaign kicked off looking for $2M to secure the production of three new episodes. The next tier is set for $3.3M which will unlock a total of six new episodes and the launch of Gizmoplex apps for all of the major platforms. At $4.4M it will expand to nine new episodes and live events over the course of a year. And the final announced tier is set at $5.5M which will bring the campaign up to 12 feature-length episodes and 12 short episodes.

Barely 24 hours into the campaign, and it sits at 10,230 backers for a total of $1.93M. With 29 days left to go, the $2M goal will be no issue, and we’ll have to see where it goes from there. The last campaign ended up with 48,270 backers and $5.76M in pledges.
