Masters of the Universe movie may head to Netflix

Sony Pictures has been in development on a new Masters of the Universe movie since 2007, but it now appears that the studio may have some new ideas for it.

Producing a movie is always a risky situation. Millions of dollars put on the line, and if a film flops, it could jeopardize future projects as well. With this in mind, it seems that Sony Pictures may be looking at teaming up with Netflix for the Masters of the Universe project.

According to sources speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman is in preliminary talks with Netflix about making this a joint project. The talks haven’t clarified yet what the structure of the deal will look like or if there is a chance that the film will see any sort of theatrical run.

With the failure of Men in Black International, it’s easy to see why the studio would be nervous about another big-budget reboot. Netflix is a natural partner for this particular project thanks to its current She-Ra and The Princesses of Power series, and the upcoming He-Man animated series by Kevin Smith. Netflix is deep in the He-Man mythos at this point, so why not tackle a movie as well?

Currently the Masters of the Universe movie is on the schedule for a March 2021 release date, but that may move back if negotiations are ongoing.
