Bumblebee being a VW Bug isn’t the only piece of nostalgia we’re getting in the upcoming Transformers movie it would seem.
The second Bumblebee trailer has arrived, and while the first one was cute enough, the second one is giving old school Transformers fans all of the nostalgia feelings they could ever want.
During what is probably a point of Bumblebee showing Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld) images of his homeworld, and the war that destroyed it, we get some good looks at classic Transformers designs. For sure we see classic designs of Shockwave and Starscream. (That may be Skywarp off to the right?)
And, of course, a very Generation 1 Optimus Prime.
And then… comes Soundwave.
With tape ejecting Ravage!
That was one thing Michael Bay – who is serving as an executive producer on this – never seemed to get. All we wanted was the classic designs. There was a reason we loved the Transformers, and a large part of that was the character designs. Although I expect this to be a very short moment in the film, it makes me way more interested in seeing the film.
On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug.
Bumblebee his theaters on Dec. 21.
UPDATE: The international trailer has arrived with some additional footage.
