Hamilton heading to Disney Plus on July 3

It seems that Disney just couldn’t keep the Broadway recording of Hamilton to itself for much longer, and it is now on its way to Disney Plus.

Announced in Feb.. Walt Disney Studios had acquired the theatrical and streaming rights of the original Broadway production of Hamilton for $75M. The original plan called for the recording to hit theaters on Oct. 15, 2021, and then head to Disney Plus, but it appears that the Coronavirus has changed all of that.

On Tuesday it was announced that Hamilton will hit Disney Plus on July 3 of this year. No word if there will ever be a follow-up theatrical release.

This isn’t the most surprising of moves as Disney Plus is going to soon need as much content as it can get its hands on. With productions shut down around the world, plans are constantly changing.

The other note here is that this production was filmed in June 2016. There has been a lot of talk about the unique way it was filmed and how it is unlike any other live musical recording ever. Will it translate well to TV? We’ll just have to wait and see.
