The Sopranos is celebrated as one of the best television series ever, but when it ended in 2007, it seemed as though that would be the end of the franchise. Now, 14 years later (later than originally planned thanks to COVID) the franchise is back with a prequel about the teenage years of future mob captain Tony Soprano.
In case you’re wondering, the young Tony is being played by Michael Gandolfini, the son of the late James Gandolfini.
There are lot of other characters from the series represented here such as Livia, Uncle Junior, Paulie Walnuts, Silvio, and more. It will be interesting to see how Tony begins to form the foundation of his crew that will be with him for the rest of time we know him.
There is no indication if we could see other future prequels about Tony and his crew, but we’ll have to wait and see if this is a one-time coda to the series.
Young Anthony Soprano is growing up in one of the most tumultuous eras in Newark’s history, becoming a man just as rival gangsters begin to rise up and challenge the all-powerful DiMeo crime family’s hold over the increasingly race-torn city. Caught up in the changing times is the uncle he idolizes, Dickie Moltisanti, who struggles to manage both his professional and personal responsibilities—and whose influence over his nephew will help make the impressionable teenager into the all-powerful mob boss we’ll later come to know: Tony Soprano.
The Many Saints of Newark will hit theaters and HBO Max on Oct. 1.
