The hunt is on for a new James Bond, and they better be ready to commit to the long-haul.

In a new interview with Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, the producers have said that the hunt for the new actor is in its “early days.” They said they have spoken with Idris Elba, who many fans have suggested for years now, is not interested. He has said that when he “looks into the mirror” he doesn’t see Bond.
“The thing is, it’s going to be a couple of years off,” said Broccoli. “And when we cast Bond, it’s a 10-, 12-year commitment. So he’s probably thinking, ‘Do I really want that thing? Not everybody wants to do that. It was hard enough getting [Daniel Craig to do it].” Wilson added, “And he was in his early 30s at the time!”
“That’s why, when people go, ‘Oh, who are you going to get?’ it’s not just about casting an actor for a film. It’s about a reinvention, and ‘Where are we taking it? What do we want to do with the character?’” said Broccoli. “And then, once we figure that out, who’s the right person for that particular reinvention?”
For now, Broccoli says that Bond is evolving, but just how fast is the question. “Bond is evolving just as men are evolving. I don’t know who’s evolving at a faster pace,” said the producer.
It will be several years before we get a new James Bond film, but it’s clear that the choice of who will next play the severe agent is not being taken lightly.
