Walmart has some big plans for its Black Friday event this year, and it’s nothing like we have seen a major retailer do before.

As one might suspect, the coronavirus pandemic is going to factor into how retailers approach Black Friday this year. Walmart has announced its plans, and it feels like it’s the most sensible set of plans it could have come up with.
Walmart Black Friday 2020 will be split into three events. Each one will begin online and then continue in the physical stores three days later. The first event will launch on Nov. 4 online (Nov. 7 in stores) and will focus on toys, electronics, and home products. The second event will be online on Nov. 11 (Nov. 14 in stores) and will focus on items such as TVs, smartphones, computers, tablets, and other merchandise categories. The final event will kick off on Nov. 25 online (Nov. 27 in stores) and will be a large selection including toys, electronics, apparel, seasonal decor, and more.
“We’ve been very thoughtful as we planned this year’s event,” Scott McCall, executive vice president and chief merchandising officer for Walmart U.S., said in a news release. “By spreading deals out across multiple days and making our hottest deals available online, we expect the Black Friday experience in our stores will be safer and more manageable for both our customers and our associates.”
The idea of multiple days makes a lot of sense in this environment, and it makes even more sense for the sales to begin online first. Now we’ll have to wait and see how other retailers respond.
