Over this past weekend, Disney hit a massive milestone as it became the first studio to hit $10B at the global box office.
To be fair, as of Sunday it was sitting at $9.997B globally with $3.2B domestic and $6.717B foreign. This also does not account for Fox properties that it acquired this year. If you add those in the numbers expand to $11.94B global ($3.8B domestic/$8.14B foreign).
Even more eye-opening? Let us not forget that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is on the way on Dec. 18 in foreign markets and Dec. 20 in the U.S.
With the way things are going, Disney is already on its way to its sixth film to break the billion-dollar mark at the box office with Frozen 2. The other five films to pass the milestone are Avengers: Endgame ($2.798B), The Lion King ($1.656B), Captain Marvel ($1.130B), Toy Story 4 ($1.074B) and Aladdin ($1.051B). Seeing as only 44 films have ever broken the billion-dollar barrier, the face Disney has done it six times in one year is impressive.
Can Disney keep up these types of numbers? Investors will look for this be the norm from here on out, but any way you slice this, this is a big number to try to duplicate. We’ll just have to wait to see what happens.
