Tom Holland can’t seem to catch a break it seems. First Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios part ways over Spider-Man, and now he’s without a director again for the Uncharted movie.
It was announced on Thursday that Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane) has left Uncharted, making him the fifth director to do so. According to Deadline, Sony is wasting no time in trying to find another director and wants one locked down soon. Currently, there are no plans to move the start of production from the beginning of 2020.
As for Tom Holland, he is still attached to star in the film.
Uncharted has been in the works for ages. The first turbulence hit in 2011 when the film was set with David O. Russell to direct and Mark Whalberg to star. Russell dropped out and was replaced by Neil Burger who dropped out in 2012. Seth Gordon was brought on in 2014, but he walked away in 2015. Shawn Levy then stepped in as of 2016, and that was when Tom Holland was finally announced. Levy stepped away in 2018 just to be replaced by Trachtenberg, who has now also walked away.
There’s no indication what went wrong this time, but this was definitely not the news that Sony Pictures needed this week following the Spider-Man kerfuffle.
We’ll have to wait and see who is named as a replacement this time, but there is no indication who it will be.
