Grand Theft Auto V can’t be stopped despite arriving almost six years ago.
In its latest report, the NPD Group lists the best-selling video games for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. Rockstar Games’ latest Grand Theft Auto game, which sits around 110 million copies shipped worldwide, continues leading the pack. Elsewhere, familiar names like Call of Duty and Super Mario that round out the rankings.
The lists don’t offer up any major surprises, to be honest. Take-Two, Activision Blizzard, and Electronic Arts are dominant on the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One. With multiple studios under their watch, they’re able to generate large-scale titles on a consistent basis. Meanwhile, Sony Interactive Entertainment earned two spots and Microsoft’s Xbox Games Studios didn’t appear at all in the top ten.
Nintendo, though, takes up all but one spot on the NPD Group’s list for the Switch. So there’s proof that Nintendo’s platforms live and die by first-party titles. However, its competitors thrive with third-party titles based on well-established franchises.

Mind you, this generation isn’t over. Sony and Microsoft are developing next-generation hardware, but the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One aren’t going to be retired immediately. Also, Nintendo remains committed to the Switch as its flagship.
With all that said, there’s no reason to expect a slowdown in first-party and third-party titles that’ll keep you entertained for the next few years.
