The New PG-13 Deadpool Movie is a Huge Deal for Disney

Turns out, there really will be a “new” Deadpool movie hitting theaters in December, and it’s titled Once Upon a Deadpool. Details for the film were unveiled this week along with a release date: December 12 to December 24.

The movie is essentially Deadpool 2 with a PG-13 rating and some new footage to frame the film. For those curious, much of the new footage features Ryan Reynolds telling the story of Deadpool 2 to Fred Savage, similar to how The Princess Bride was presented. If you know, you know.

But that’s not even what makes this release a big deal.

For years, Fox has begged Reynolds to make Deadpool PG-13, thus making it more appealing to a wider audience. With Disney’s impending acquisition of 21st Century Fox, this experiment will allegedly inform the studio on how to incorporate Deadpool into the MCU, if at all.

“The response to the PG-13 repackaging is also being watched closely by the leadership at Disney and its Marvel Studios and may inform the way they incorporate Deadpool into their plans,” according to Deadline.

In the form that Deadpool is in now, the character doesn’t exactly mesh with Disney’s squeaky-clean image. He’s violent, vulgar, and completely arrogant. Basically, he’s Iron Man, but with much more cursing.

If you decide to check out Once Upon a Deadpool in theaters, $1 of each ticket sold will go to the Fuck Cancer charity.
