In the lead up to Captain Marvel, Marvel studios has been very careful about not setting it up as a prequel to the Avengers. It was pretty much just saying that it takes place before the events of the Avengers, but the two are definitely their own separate movies. All that changed with the release of the Japanese poster for the movie.
The poster itself is the same one we got here in the States that shows Captain Marvel front and center in a hangar. What is new is the tagline the hangs above her. The American version reads: “Higher, Further, Faster.” The Japanese version says something completely different.
When translated, it reads: “Lost Past, Memories Trapped, Is this me? The story before the Avengers.”
If that’s not setting up Captain Marvel as a prequel to the Avengers, I don’t know what is. And that’s not a bad thing. We already know it is a prequel. It’s just good to see Marvel stop playing with us and being up front about the story the movie will explore, which will include the forming of the Avengers Initiative.
Captain Marvel flies into theaters March 8, 2019.
