It’s been quite a year for unexpected movie hits. It started with Black Panther grossing over $2 billion at the global box office. Then Venom went on and surprised everybody by overcoming bad reviews to gross over $800 million. Now, Aquaman is beating even the most ambitious expectations by being on pace to become the highest grossing DCEU movie ever.
After enjoying a robust opening at the domestic box office with a $67 million take, Aquaman continued that success into Christmas and is now at over $550 million at the global box office. According to Forbes, that puts it on pace to close out the year with $700 million. The movie is now expected to pass the $1 billion mark in January.
In eclipsing the $1 billion mark, that would easily make Aquaman the most successful DCEU movie ever. The current leader is Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice with $873 million.
Beyond reaching that big milestone, if Aquaman passes the $1.084 billion mark, it will become the highest grossing DC movie ever, surpassing The Dark Knight Rises.
With such a healthy box office performance, it’ll pretty much guarantee a sequel. Now the studio just needs to make sure to ink director James Wan to a new deal, as he only signed up for one movie.
