Mulan release date postponed to late Aug.

To absolutely no one’s surprise, the Mulan release date has been delayed once again, effectively ending the summer movie season.

On Friday, the Walt Disney Company announced that Mulan would be moving from July 24 to Aug. 21. This is the second movie for the film during the coronavirus pandemic as it was originally scheduled for March 27.

The announcement of the release date change had only become a matter of time once Warner Bros. moved Tenet from July 31 to Aug. 12. If Mulan had stayed on the July 24 date it would have been far too long for the film to be by itself in an already uncertain landscape.

“While the pandemic has changed our release plans for Mulan and we will continue to be flexible as conditions require, it has not changed our belief in the power of this film and its message of hope and perseverance,” said Disney’s co-chairman and chief creative officer Alan Horn and co-chairman Alan Bergman. “Director Niki Caro and our cast and crew have created a beautiful, epic, and moving film that is everything the cinematic experience should be, and that’s where we believe it belongs — on the world stage and the big screen for audiences around the globe to enjoy together.”

There are still two movies scheduled for July – Russell Crowe’s Unhinged and the Sony comedy, The Broken Hearts Gallery – but there is every chance those will move as well.

The Summer That Wasn’t

With no major blockbusters left in July, the Summer 2020 movie season has effectively come to a close. With the current upswing in coronavirus cases around the United States, it is becoming increasingly likely that the 2020 movie year may be completely over. We’ll have to wait and see, but we won’t be too surprised if that’s where we land.
