It was recently announced that Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have “left” Disney and the Star Wars trilogy that they have been working on. Although there have been reports that they were actually booted immediately after the Game of Thrones finale. But that story aside, in an article from Variety it was just revealed what the details of their trilogy would have been about.
In a report from Variety, Benioff and Weiss reportedly were building their trilogy around the creation of the Jedi. While this seems like an extremely interesting area of Star Wars lore to explore, it doesn’t seem like Lucasfilm and Disney wanted this story at all.
The writing pair reportedly expressed that working with Lucasfilm and Disney was not easy at all, and that past writers had very similar experiences to them. While they are told that they are given full creative control, it doesn’t seem that they get any creative control at all. J.J. Abrams and Rian Johnson seemed to know how to navigate the politics at Lucasfilm. Regardless of what you thought of either of their films, they seemed to have a huge amount of creative control over their stories.
Now, everything aside, I love the idea of a series of films about the creation of the Jedi Order. Although, after seeing these trailers for The Mandalorian, maybe a streaming series about the Jedi Order would make more sense. But I am also not sad to see David Benioff and D.B. Weiss away from the Star Wars name. Not only do I have Star Wars fatigue, I also wasn’t a huge fan of the direction that Game of Thrones went towards after the fourth season.
No word as of yet as to what the next Star Wars movie will be after The Rise of Skywalker, but stay tuned.
