The world of being a television provider is a rough one, and as user viewing habits change, so will the companies that provide the content. Sony tried something radical with PlayStation Vue, but it appears it just wasn’t meant to be.
Sony announced on Tuesday that it will be shutting down its PlayStation Vue television service on Jan. 30, 2020. “Unfortunately, the highly competitive Pay TV industry, with expensive content and network deals, has been slower to change than we expected,” said Sony’s John Kodera in a statement. “Because of this, we have decided to remain focused on our core gaming business.”
PlayStation Vue was launched as a non-traditional cable TV-style company. It allowed you to subscribe to cable channels from anywhere in the U.S., and in most markets also get your local channels as well.
There are competitors out there such as Sling TV and YouTube TV, but if you were using your PlayStation to view the content, you may be stuck. One also has to wonder if this is a sign of things to come for services such as this. Hopefully this will be a one-off as cord-cutters, which is a growing demographic, lean on these services for their traditional television viewing.
Sony did confirm that you will continue to be able to access your movie and television purchases past the end date of the service.
