Deadline is reporting that Disney Branded Television has ordered a pilot for a Wizards of Waverly Place sequel series. The new project will be executive-produced by original series stars Selena Gomez (Alex Russo) and David Henrie (Justin Russo) and will focus on Justin’s new family. Gomez is slated to make an appearance in the pilot episode.

The premise is said to follow Justin’s new life as a de-powered wizard. He chose to live out a human life with his wife and two sons. But, following a mysterious event at Wizech, a powerful young wizard finds their way to his doorstep in need of some help, forcing Justin back into the world of wizards and training him to ensure the future of all wizards.

Billie, the new young wizard, will be played by Janice LeAnn Brown. Alkaio Thiele (Call Me Kat) will play Justin’s oldest son, Roman, and Mimi Gianopulos (American Princess) will play Justin’s wife, Giada. No word yet on Justin’s second son.

The original series ran on the Disney Channel from 2007 to 2012, with a final reunion movie in 2013. No word yet on other possible original series stars making appearances, but seeing as David DeLuise and Jennifer Stone are currently hosting a podcast about the original show, we wouldn’t be too surprised to see them appear at some point.

Joining Gomez and Henrie as executive producers will be Jed Elinoff, Scott Thomas, Gary Marsh (Disney’s Descendants: The Rise of Red), and Andy Fickman (Race to Witch Mountain). Fickman will also direct the pilot.
