Jack Black is heading the block-filled world of the Minecraft movie, and is said to be playing everyone’s avatar known as “Steve.” Previously cast in the film are Jason Momoa, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, and Sebastian Eugene Hansen.
No writing credits have been announced as of yet for the film, and the plot is being kept under wraps. For anyone familiar with the game, we’re sure you’re just as puzzled as we are as to what the plot could possibly be.
Launched in 2011, Minecraft has become the most successful video game in history, with 300 million copies sold and 140 million active monthly players. The game finds your character – the aforementioned “Steve” – plopped into a world filled with blocks that you can break and place as you like. Over the years the game has gotten deeper adding other realms you can access such as The Nether and The End, but at its core it remains about building and surviving.
A film take on the popular game has been in the works for years now, but it looks as though this one may finally make it across the finish line. The film is being backed by Vertigo, Legendary, Mojang/Microsoft, and Jason Momoa’s On the Roam production company. Producers include Jon Berg, Vu Bui, Cale Boyter, Roy Lee, Momoa, Torfi Frans Olafsson, Mary Parent, and the late Jill Messick. Executive producers include Todd Hallowell, Brian Mendoza, Jonathan Spaihts, and Kayleen Walters. Jared Hess is directing.
No release date has been announced as of yet, and production is due to start any day now.
