It feels as though it took longer than it should have, but The CW has finally ordered a pilot for a Batwoman series.
Introduced during this year’s Arrowverse crossover event, Elseworlds, The CW DC shows finally gave us a formal introduction to Gotham City and one member of the Batman family. Ruby Rose was chosen to play Kate Kane/Batwoman with the intention that if the character did well in the crossover it could move into its own series. Fans did seem to like her, but then we went into a holding pattern waiting for the announcement of a pilot.
The pilot will be overseen by Greg Berlanti who runs the Arrowverse and Riverdale for The CW, as well as Chilling Adventures of Sabrina for Netflix. The pilot was written by Caroline Dries (Vampire Diaries), and David Nutter is set to direct. All three will serve as executive producers along with Sarah Schechter and Geoff Johns.
The fact Batwoman didn’t just go straight to a series order seems like a formality more than anything. The chance for The CW to play around in Gotham just seems too good for the network to pass up. It feels as though the series appearing on the fall schedule for The CW is inevitable, we just have to get through the red tape to get there.
